All about probability & how it is used in various fields!

The concept of probability is defined as the possibility of a random event arising. It is part of mathematics that describes how likely events are to occur. You will learn how to determine the possibility of an outcome from a random experiment by studying probability theory. This is how the probability distribution is used as well. We must first determine the total possibility of outcomes for a single event to find its probability.

Using probability, it is possible to accurately predict the chances of an event being held. Many events cannot be predicted to a 100% degree of certainty. However, we can estimate how likely it will be that the event will occur, using probability. One can define probability as a number between 0 and 1, where 0 denotes an impossible situation and 1 denotes a feasible one. In a sampling space, one is the expected probability of all events.

Example of probability:

When flipping a coin, only two possible outcomes can occur: Head or Tail (H, T). The result of tossing two coins in the air is that the coins may either show heads or tails, or one coin may show both heads and tails, i.e., (H, H), (H, T), (T, T).

The formula for probability:

An event’s probability can be approximated by the ratio of favorable outcomes to total outcomes, which defines the probability of the event to occur. In addition to this basic formula, some other formulas are depending on a particular situation.

Probability of event to happen P(E) = Number of favorable outcomes/Total Number of outcomes

Applications of probability:

  1. Used in making weather predictions: We always check the weather forecast before planning an outing or picnic. To predict the weather forecast, meteorologists use certain tools and techniques. They analyze different historical periods which have similar characteristics, such as temperature, humidity, and pressure.
  2. Come up with election results: Exit poll results are sometimes used by political analysts to estimate the outcome of the election’s results. For example, they might predict a specific political party will succeed; based on their predictions.
  3. Sports predictions: For instance, based on the record of an individual to determine the chances of winning or losing. For the same reason, it is the probability that is employed to formulate sports strategies.
  4. Used to success rates in medical operations: Patients often seek out the success rate of surgery before going forth with the operation, which is nothing but a probability rate from a doctor. The patient decides whether or not the surgery should be conducted based on the said probability rate.
  5. Card games: The skill-based card game of rummy uses the concepts of probability, permutations, combinations, and chance. Participants constantly calculate their chances of getting specific cards and learn about probability without even realizing they are doing so.
  6. Chances of recovery in an insurance policy: We study which insurance policy is appropriate depending on how we use something and/or what kind of damage it is likely to sustain and what kinds of recovery process we can achieve when getting something insured.

In probability theory, the probability of an event happening is described through a set of axioms or hypotheses that define the concept. Probability theories are interpreted differently by different people, but they all express the concept accurately. As a result, a chance measure is defined in terms of a possible space that defines a value between 0 and 1. This set of outcomes in the sample space is known as the probability measure.
