Smartwatch and What are the Benefits of Smartwatch?

Smartwatch can do a lot of things that your smartphone can’t. Benefits include tracking your heart rate, sleep, activity, and overall fitness level. You can also play music and do activities without a phone and even pay in the store.

What benefits do smartwatch provide?

I’ve used smartwatches and fitness trackers for a number of years and decided to do some research to supplement my own take on what the benefits of using these devices really are. So what are the benefits of smart watches? Smart watches provide easy access to some of the apps on smartphones and also provide sensor data, such as heart rate monitoring and sleep tracking, that are not available on smartphones. See later in this article for an extensive list and descriptions of smartwatch functionality.

Did you come to this article because you are thinking about buying a smart watch or fitness tracker, but you are still not completely sure if the investment is worth it? I certainly think so. You can check out my smartwatch and fitness tracker buyers guide with recommendations for all budgets starting under $50. Still not convinced, check out my video below on the top 5 features smartwatches provide.

What is a smartwatch?

Smart watches are wearable computers in the form of wristwatches that provide more functions than just timekeeping. They often include integration with your smartphone that shows your incoming calls and messages, and some apps with additional functionality like weather information and maps for directions.

Smart watches provide an extension to your smartphone that displays some of the content that you might see on your phone but without reaching for it. Another thing that smartwatches provide is different sensors for fitness and health tracking. Step counting, heart rate monitoring, and GPS are some of the features that can come with a smartwatch.

Smartwatch vs smartphone

Smartphones can do many of the things you can do on a smartwatch, but best smartwatches 2022 are better suited for some things depending on the circumstances. While driving a car or cycling, it’s much more convenient to check notifications on your smartwatch than trying to get your phone out of your pocket. It’s nice to see, for example, the caller’s name before answering the phone through the Bluetooth headset. Smartphones come with built-in GPS, but it may be more convenient to simply not take your phone with you when you go for a run and use your smartwatch’s built-in GPS to track the duration and speed of your run.

Smartwatches also add things that your smartphone just doesn’t have, for example heart rate monitoring. I really enjoy the heart rate measurement feature when playing sports and I don’t even need to wear a chest strap like I did a few years ago. Hearing frequency measurements from the wrist have become really accurate. It’s also nice that it tracks my activity throughout the day and I can challenge myself to walk more and take the stairs instead of the elevator. The movement and heart rate tracking also allows you to get information about the time and quality of sleep automatically, which can be beneficial and allows you to ensure you get enough sleep and go to bed on time.

waterproof smart watches

Smart watches are very versatile devices that are usually water resistant. I like to leave my smartwatch on when I go swimming or doing water sports and even when I go to the sauna. Some smartphones are also waterproof nowadays, but it would be very inconvenient to carry a smartphone while swimming. In addition to telling the time, I like to measure the duration of my swim and some devices also measure distance and heart rate while swimming. If you want to know more about smartwatches suitable for swimming, check out my article on the subject.

Smart watches for diving are also becoming fashionable and multiple manufacturers such as Garmin are providing devices for this purpose.

  2. A brief history of the smart watch

While digital watches have been around for decades, some with abilities like calculators and unit converters, it was only in the 2010s that tech companies started releasing watches with smartphone-like capabilities.

Apple, Samsung, Sony, and other major players offer smartwatches in the consumer market, but one small company actually deserves credit for popularizing the modern smartwatch. When Pebble announced its first smartwatch in 2013, it raised a record amount of funding on Kickstarter and sold more than a million units.

At the same time, advances in silicon miniaturization opened the door to other types of smartwatches for specific purposes. Companies like Garmin, for example, support smartwatches like the Fenix, which are more rugged and optimized with sensors and trackers to support expeditions into the interior of the country. In addition, companies such as Suunto have launched smartwatches optimized for diving that last a long time at significant depths.

What do smart watches do?

Most smartwatches, whether for everyday use (like the Apple Watch) or for specific purposes (like the Garmin Fenix), offer a set of standard features:

Notifications: Smartphones display notifications to notify you of important events or activities.

The types of notifications differ; Smartphone-connected devices can simply mirror phone notifications to your wrist, but other smartwatches display notifications that only a wearable device could provide.

For example, the newer Apple Watch includes a drop sensor. If you fall while wearing the watch, it detects your movement subsequent. Otherwise it sends a series of escalating notifications. If it doesn’t detect any movement.

If you don’t respond to the notification, the watch assumes you’re injured and alerts authorities on your behalf.
Apps: Beyond showing notifications from your phone, a smartwatch is only as good as the apps it supports. Application ecosystems vary and are tied to the Apple or Google environments.

Smartwatches with a specific purpose, like hiking or diving, generally support the apps they need to accomplish that purpose without the opportunity to add other types of apps.

Media Management: Most smartwatches paired with smartphones can manage media playback for you. For example, when you listen to music on an iPhone using Apple AirPods, you can use your Apple Watch to change the volume and tracks.

Respond to messages by voice: Remember the old Dick Tracy comics, where the detective hero used a watch as a phone? Modern smartwatches running the watchOS or Wear operating systems support voice dictation.

Fitness tracking: If you’re a die-hard athlete, a dedicated fitness tracker is probably a better option than a smartwatch. Still, many smartwatches include a heart rate monitor and pedometer to help keep track of your workouts.

GPS – Most smartwatches include a GPS to track your location or receive location-specific alerts.
Good battery life: Modern smartwatches have batteries that get you through the day, with normal use, and still have a bit of juice left. Battery usage varies; the Apple.
