Top Horse Shampoos and Conditioners

Keeping your horse’s coat looking gorgeous is part of equestrian life!  Healthy hair reflects horse health and makes for a lovely show ring appearance. But where to start with a horse’s hair care?  The first diet, then grooming, then-premier equine shampoo, and conditioners.

The best horsehair care products to lather up your horse

Mane ‘n Tail has a unique following amongst horse people, as their Mane ‘n Tail Shampoo and Mane ‘n Tail Conditioner is often used by equestrians on their own hair!  The formula is gentle while creating shine.  The line is rounded out with a detangler for mane and tail care.

Farnam’s Vetrolin bath is a fantastic moisturizer, and the line also includes other products.  The Vetrolin detangler for manes and tails doubles as a conditioner, and the Vetrolin liniment can soothe your horse’s sore muscles.

Cowboy Magic’s products are specific to a horse’s needs.  For added shine, use the Super Bodyshine formula with aloe vera.  For light, gray, and white horses, use the Cowboy Magic Shine In Yellow Out formula as a stain remover.

Eqyss uses natural botanicals in their products, like marigold, to protect your horse’s coat from sun damage.  The Premier Equine shampoo uses extracts to clean and shine your horse without detergents.

For horses with sensitive skin, the E3 Tea Tree horse shampoos provides cleansing lather with tea tree to soothe sensitive skin.  It’s a naturally medicated horse shampoos for healthy horse skin.

Exhibitor Quick Shine is part of a color-specific line.  This Quick Shine is for all colors of horses. The line also includes special formulations for gray and white horses, red and light bay horses, and dark and black horses.

eZall takes lather in a different direction!  Their application system connects to your hose, and sprays on their body wash.  Follow up with a rinse and some eZall Shine and Detangler.

Absorbine’s Shawsheen hair polish is a shine maker, in a spray version.  Your horse’s hair will be slick, and manes and tails will be untangled and sparkling in the sun.

Shapley’s Original M-T-G  is not a horse shampoo.  This skin treatment has antifungal and antibacterial properties to help a horse’s skin clear infections and stimulate hair growth. M-T-G can help with hair loss and hot spots on your horse. The M-T-G Plus variation has herbal elements to mask the unique smell once the product dries.

Bathing tips for your horse

Plan on getting just a little bit wet when you bathe your horse!  The goal is to make bath time safe and enjoyable for your horse, without stripping his skin of natural oils.

Start with warm water on a nice day when he won’t be cold as he dries.  Wet your horse from the legs up so he adjusts to the temperature.  You can pour some shampoo into a bucket of water and sponge some suds on, or apply your favorite horse shampoos to a grooming mitt.  Lather your horse as you would curry him – with circular motions.

Use a sweat scraper to remove most of the shampoo bubbles, this makes rinsing faster and you save a bit of water.  Then you can condition your horse’s mane, tail, and entire body if need be.  Conditioners coat the mane and tail and may prevent split ends.  Let that sit for a few minutes and rinse thoroughly.

Your last step is to let your horse dry and apply some spray-on sheen or conditioner if you like.  Enjoy the shine for a few minutes before the rolling starts!
